Buford, which has won 10 consecutive games and is 18-3 overall, is the new No. 1 girls team in Class AAAA, climbing one spot in this week’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings.

Moving down is St. Pius (19-2), which suffering a 61-40 loss Saturday to Class AAAAAA No. 6 Mountain View. Jonesboro (20-1) moved up one spot to No. 2, while St. Pius fell to No. 3.

Buford was the AAA state runner-up to St. Pius last season. Buford is led by N.C. State-signee Camille Anderson.

There were two other new No. 2 girls teams besides Jonesboro and their moves were significant. Mays (17-2) jumped seven spots to No. 2 in AAAAA. The Raiders rolled to a 64-46 victory against Stephenson, which was No. 2 last week and formerly held the No. 1 spot. Mays was also aided by losses by five of the eight teams ranked above it.

The other new No. 2 is AAA South Atlanta, which improved to 21-0. The Hornets jumped from No. 4 after a 68-52 victory against the previous No. 2 Laney, which fell to No. 4.

In the boys’ rankings, 26 of the 60 top-10 teams from last week lost games, although many were not surprising. The top four teams in each classification remained the same.

In AAAAAA, two highly ranked teams lost to out-of-state opponents ranked in the nation’s top 10: No. 1 Wheeler to Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, Calif., and No. 4 Pebblebrook to DeMatha of Hyattsville, Md. They maintained their spots in the rankings.

Collins Hill also lost to No. 5 Norcross. Alpharetta and McEachern were bounced from the rankings after losses to unranked teams and were replaced by Pope and Hillgrove.

In AAAAA, No. 1 Miller Grove had a good week, beating No. 3 M.L. King and No. 7 Southwest DeKalb. Effingham County, Northside-Warner Robins and Northside-Columbus fell out of the top 10, replaced by LaGrange, Apalachee and Stockbridge.

Laney, the No. 1 team in AAA, also fared well, beating No. 4 Morgan County and No. 6 Butler.

Other new boys teams in the rankings are Harlem, replacing Swainsboro in AA, and Wilkinson County for Landmark Christian in A.
