The two divisions of Class A have new No. 1 teams in the Georgia high school girls basketball rankings after an eventful week in which 27 of the state’s 80 ranked teams, roughly one-third, took at least one loss.

Model ascended to No. 1 in Class A Division I after previous No. 1 Elbert County suffered its first loss, 52-36 to Banks County, and dropped to No. 2. Elbert County had beaten Banks County 59-39 on Dec. 13. Banks County debuted in the top 10 last week at No. 7 and continued its climb to No. 3. Model is 15-3 with losses to higher-classification schools Calhoun (3A), North Cobb (6A) and McEachern (6A) by an average of seven points.

Wilcox County became the new No. 1 team in Class A Division II on the strength of a 70-26 victory over previous No. 3 Telfair County. Wilcox County, ranked No. 2 last week, swapped places with previous No. 1 Taylor County. Telfair County, which also lost to Class 2A Appling County last week, dropped to No. 7.

Taylor County is one of four remaining unbeaten girls teams in the state. The others are No. 2 North Forsyth of Class 6A and No. 1 Creekside and No. 3 Warner Robins of Class 4A.

Seven new teams moved into the top 10s. Pope made a quick return at No. 10 in Class 5A after losing its spot last week following lopsided losses to No. 2 River Ridge and No. 8 Creekview. Pope took the place of Arabia Mountain, which dropped out after a loss to No. 6 Tri-Cities.

In other classes, Dalton replaced Stockbridge in Class 4A; Morgan County and Tattnall County replaced Hart County and Union County in Class 2A; ACE Charter and Vidalia replaced Putnam County and Temple in Class A Division I; and Christian Heritage replaced Trinity Christian in Class 3A-A private.
