A look at former Douglass High star Jamal Lewis at 2009 Cleveland Browns NFL football camp and in AJC file photos.

Cleveland Browns standout Jamal Lewis is schooling fellow Douglass High alum James Davis, a rookie, in the art of being an NFL running back. While at Douglass High, Davis ended up breaking all the school rushing records Lewis had set for the Astros.

At Douglass, Lewis (31, center) rushed for a school-record 4,879 yards and 68 TDs -- a record later broken by Browns teammate and fellow Douglass alum James Davis.

Lewis (31, left, in 1996) rushed for 1,716 yards and 25 TD as a senior and earned AAAA All-State and All-City honors.

Lewis (31, right, vs. Dunwoody in 1995) gained 1,923 yards and scored 28 TDs as a junior.

Originally, Lewis was a fullback before being switched to running back.

Lewis (31, left) rushed for 1,947 yards and 29 touchdowns to lead Douglass to an 11-2 record and the Region 7-AAAA championship in 1995.

As a member of the 1996 AJC Super 11, Lewis told staff writer Leo Willingham, "I love to play the game because it prepares me for life in a variety of ways. This is important because I consider football as a means to the end."
