1. Turner County 13, Charlton County 7: A week after beating rival Clinch County to reach 5-0 for the first time since 2014, Charlton County lost to a Turner County team that was projected by the computer Maxwell Ratings as a 23-point underdog. Turner came into the game just 1-4 but has now won three straight in the series, including 53-7 last year.

2. Spalding 31, Perry 26: Spalding, a 1-9 team each of the past two seasons, reached the five-win mark for the first time since 2016 with a Region 4-4A victory over of 20-point favorite Perry, which was 4-0 and ranked No. 3. Spalding, which last won a region title in 2003, and Baldwin are the only remaining unbeaten teams in region play, and they will meet on Oct. 22.

3. Newnan 42, North Paulding 17: Newnan recorded the biggest upset of the week, according to Maxwell, when it beat 36-point favorite North Paulding. Newnan came in with a 1-3 record, having lost to Starr’s Mill, Sandy Creek and Harris County by a total of 19 points. North Paulding had been 3-1, including victories over South Paulding and Brookwood.

4. North Forsyth 30, West Forsyth 27: West Forsyth, which has been in and out of the Class 7A rankings this season, is back out after losing to a 29-point underdog in its Region 6 opener. It was North Forsyth’s second consecutive victory in the series after losing nine straight from 2011 to 2019. North Forsyth is tied for third place in the seven-team region.

5. Carrollton 40, South Paulding 13: Carrollton kept alive its hopes of defending its 5-6A title with a victory over 10-point underdog South Paulding. Carrollton was coming off a 45-27 loss to Rome, which had lost to South Paulding the previous week. All three teams are tied with Alexander for second place in the region, a game behind unbeaten Douglas County.

Worth noting: Carver (Atlanta) beat eight-point underdog Westminster 36-20 for its second consecutive win in the series. The Panthers had been 0-24 all-time against Georgia’s existing private schools until beating Westminster and losing to GAC last year. … Deerfield-Windsor won for just the fourth time since moving to the GHSA last season, beating 31-point favorite Savannah Country Day 37-36. Deerfield-Windsor was 2-8 last year and is 2-4 this season. Savannah Country Day won 42-32 in 2020. … Lumpkin County ended a 16-game losing streak in region play with a 32-30 victory over 17-point favorite Gilmer in a 7-3A game. The Indians, who beat St. Francis the previous week, are on a two-game winning streak for the first time since 2016. … Pace Academy, which had been 0-4 on the field (the Knights had a forfeit victory against McNair), beat 11-point favorite Lovett 17-14. Lovett also lost to South Atlanta the previous week, making this the first time the Lions have lost back-to-back region games in the same season since 2003. … Tucker, which had not been 0-5 since 1991, improved to 1-5 with a 28-3 victory over 11-point favorite North Atlanta. The win ultimately could be crucial in the Region 4-6A playoff race, where Westlake, Hughes and Lovejoy are likely to earn three of the four berths.
