The GHSA put its member schools into classifications this week by using a multiplier that counts out-of-zone students three times when determining a school’s class. For most public schools, their attendance zone is their school district. But private and charter schools don’t have school districts, so the GHSA assigns attendance zones (which the GHSA calls service areas) to those schools when reclassifying. Those service areas are listed below. Blessed Trinity, for example, is assigned the Roswell High school district as its service area because Blessed Trinity is in that district. Those assignments are significant. For example, Greater Atlanta Christian is slated for Class 5A with 634 students while Westminster is pegged for 4A with 825 students. That’s because GAC gets 98% of its students from out of zone, which is the Norcross High district, while Westminster gets 38% of its students from out of zone, which is the North Atlanta district. Schools with enrollments smaller than about 600 are placed in Class A regardless, so their service area is irrelevant for reclassification. But the service area is still important. Student-athletes who transfer to a private or charter school must move into the assigned service area of that school to gain immediate eligibility.
