The No. 5 Bleckley County Royals edged the No. 7 Dodge County Indians 21-19 in a Region 3 showdown that lived up to its top-10 billing.

According to Dave Whitaker’s writeup in The Bleckley Progress, the Indians had a chance to win the back-and-forth game, getting the ball with 47 seconds left and the score at its final margin, but the Royals defense forced a turnover on downs.
The Royals are 5-0 for the first time since 1991 and are 2-0 in league play. They’ll host Jasper County next week.
The Indians drop to 3-2, 0-1, with their other loss coming to No. 3 Fitzgerald. They’ll go on bye, then play at Jasper County Oct. 8.
Here’s how the rest of the top 10 fared:
- Top-ranked Callaway lost 24-8 to 4A’s unranked Thomas County Central. Daniel Evans has the writeup for The LaGrange Daily News. It was their lowest point total since losing their 2019 season opener 10-7 to Opelika (Ala). The Cavs are 4-1 and head into another bye after having last week off.
- The No. 2 Rabun County Wildcats beat Pickens (S.C.) 70-14. Blitz and accessWDUN have details. The Wildcats are 4-1.
- The No. 3 Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane lost 17-0 to 3A’s No. 3 Pierce County, dropping to 4-1. It was their first regular season loss since their 2019 season finale and the first time they’ve been shutout since 2003.
- In Region 3, the No. 8 Washington County Golden Hawks beat Lamar County 46-20, improving to 4-0, 1-0. Barnesville.com has the scoring log. Lamar County is 3-2, 0-1.
- No. 10 Putnam County held on to beat an emerging Laney Wildcats team 13-6 in a Region 4 contest. The War Eagles are 5-0 for a second year in a row and 2-0 in league play. The Wildcats (3-2, 1-1) were looking for a third win this season over a ranked opponent, with the other two coming against separate teams ranked No. 5 in 1A Public.
