The 2013 Signing Day will be a month on the books tomorrow, and Georgia State has turned its attention to the Class of 2014.

The team has 34 seniors and redshirt seniors on this year's roster.

Coach Trent Miles said he and his staff are going to focus on offensive linemen, cornerbacks and safeties, wide receivers and linebacker.

“We’ll need everything,” he said.

The team has five redshirt seniors on the offensive line. It also has four defensive backs (cornerbacks and safeties) who are redshirt seniors, as well as six wide receivers who will use up their eligibility. Most of those are starting players or key back-ups, meaning the Panthers could enter their first year of being bowl-eligible with inexperienced starters.

Several players have used social media to note offers from Georgia State, including Kalil Gray, 6-0, 217-pound linebacker at Langston Hughes High School. A pair of players from Stephenson have also reported offers: Ronald Peterkin, a 6-0, 160-pound defensive back and Cameron Glenn, a 5-11, 180-pound defensive back.

Expect Georgia State to scour the junior colleges, where it had success a month ago, and sign between 5-10 players from those schools.

Winter workouts

“There’s some energy,” he said. “I’ll be glad when we can practice football.”

In addition to improving the team’s conditioning, many of the exercises are designed to promote competition. That’s important for two reasons: the team needs to learn what the new coaching staff expects. They also need to wash away last year’s 1-10 record.

Hiring of Colbert

Miles final got Keary Colbert.

Colbert was officially introduced as the team's wide receiver coach on Monday. Miles actually tried to sign Colbert years ago when he was a coach at Fresno State and Colbert a high school standout.

Colbert instead signed with USC, where he became a second-round pick in the 2004 NFL draft.

“It’s all about recruiting,” Miles said. “He’s got a great personality and he relates well with the young men. He’s detailed and organized. He’s learned under some of the best guys. He’s been with guys I’ve coached with.”

Hunter on postseason

Georgia State men's basketball coach Ron Hunter said on Tuesday that if Georgia State were invited to a postseason tournament, they would accept. However, the Panthers' sub-.500 record ma prevent any bids. The Panthers' (15-16) season ended last Wednesday with a loss to Northeastern at the Sports Arena. The only two possibilities for Georgia State are the CBI or CIT events, however neither included a team with a losing record last year.
