Thanks to what began as an outlandish, offhanded comment at last August’s U.S. Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic Club, corporate attorney Richard Grice will be on the bag of U.S. Amateur Champion Gunn Yang at the Masters.

Atlanta's Richard Grice, a volunteer caddie for Gunn Yang during the U.S. Amateur at Johns Creek, said by way of refusing any payment: “Tell you what, if you win it all, I get to caddie for you at Augusta.” Yang won.

“To Gunn [Yang]’s credit, I don’t think it crossed his mind [to go with another caddie],” Richard Grice says as the two prepare for another winning spark in Augusta.

Five times over the week, Gunn Yang eliminated a top 100-ranked opponent, including Canada’s Corey Connors in the final of the U.S. Amateur Championship in Johns Creek last year.

Throughout the entire tournament in Johns Creek, as much as 36 holes a day, Richard Grice (right) stood with Gunn Yang.

Gunn Yang came to the 36-hole championship match of the 2014 U.S. Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club as the 776th-ranked amateur in the world.

Following his appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship Gunn Yang has appeared in two PGA Tour events this season, missing the cut in both.

Gunn Yang has maintained his amateur status in order to remain eligible to play in this Masters Tournament at Augusta National.

Atlanta attorney Richard Grice, 55, and Gunn Yang recently went to Augusta to prepare for the Masters for a couple practice rounds — Yang accompanied by an Augusta National caddie with Grice in tow, taking voluminous notes.
