Third round co-leader Kevin Chappell certainly is debunking the theory that knowledge is good.

A Tour Championship first-timer, Chappell had not disturbed a single blade of grass on East Lake before Monday of this week. And yet he is playing like he had grown up on the course.

“If you do your homework and have really good ball control, I think you can play anywhere with that,” he said earlier in the week.

Seven of the now 29-man field are first-timers. Looking at them makes one appreciate what Chappell is doing here all the more.

Two of them are under par through three rounds, if barely — both Emiliano Grillo and Justin Thomas are at 1 under.

Throw out Chappell and his 8 under and the other six rookies are a combined 7 over for the tournament.

Perhaps there is a bit of a learning curve, and Chappell is but the exception to the rule.
