Georgia Tech picked up a landmark commitment for its 2022 recruiting class Saturday, when four-star safety Jaron Willis from Lee County High announced his decision to accept a scholarship offer to join the Yellow Jackets.
Willis is rated the No. 17 prospect in the state of Georgia (247Sports Composite) and also the No. 150 overall prospect in the country. Tech has not signed a defensive player out of high school rated that highly since 2007, when defensive end Derrick Morgan and safety Morgan Burnett were the No. 72 and 77 prospects in the country, respectively. He brings the potential be a difference-making defender for the Jackets and coach Geoff Collins.
On his highlight video, Willis, listed at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, closes quickly and explodes into ball carriers, wiping out their forward momentum.
In March, Willis listed six finalists – Tech, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State, Kentucky and Ole Miss. Saturday, streaming his announcement from his Instagram page, Willis thanked his family, gathered behind him, and made mention to note that he will take all of his five official visits.
“With that being said, I’d like to commit to Georgia Tech,” he said, doffing a Yellow Jackets cap.
He later patched in video of Tech safety Juanyeh Thomas, who was watching online and had been making a push on social media for Willis to commit to Tech.
“Way to go!” Thomas shouted. “Yes, sir!”
With the addition of Willis, Tech now has three four-star prospects committed to the class out of its four commitments, joining wide receiver Janiran Bonner of Cedar Grove High and running back Antonio Martin from Langston Hughes High.
