Georgia's do-it-all athlete: Charley Trippi

Photos: Pro football Hall of Famer Charley Trippi is a legend among Georgia Bulldogs fans and was no slouch as a member of the old Atlanta Crackers baseball team, either. Here's a historic look back at this versatile athlete.

Trippi was a two-time All-America selection while at Georgia.

Original photo caption: Here, Trippi, who played halfback and quarterback at Georgia, displays the style which caused him to be placed on the AP 1946 All-America Eleven. A deadly tackler and fearless player, Trippi came up with enough kicking, passing and running ability to be a backfield in himself.

Georgia's All-Americans: Former All-American Charlie Trippi (left) and Frankie Sinkwich (right) present the William K. Jenkins Trophy to 1948 All-American Johnny Rauch. This was the third time Rauch received this trophy, honoring the Bulldogs' most outstanding player of the season.

UGA players Charley Trippi (62) and Frank Sinkwich in 1942. Sinkwich won the Heisman and Georgia finished the season 11-1, earning a consensus national champion title.

In 1947, Trippi played for the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association.

Charlie Trippi started belting the ball from the time he reached the Crackers' training camp at Gainesville, Fla. Catcher Mike Ulisney looks on. Trippi played only one season, 1947, with the team before leaving for the NFL.

Trippi hit .334 in 106 games with the Crackers.

A 2007 portrait of Trippi at his home in Athens. Now 91, Trippi remains one of the favorites of Georgia fans. His No. 62 has been retired by the Bulldogs.
