Alabama's Leigh Tiffin is trying to make it to the NFL.
His father, Van, also kicked for the Crimson Tide and played briefly in the NFL for Tampa Bay and Miami in 1987. He is known in Alabama lore for the 52-yard field goal he booted to beat Auburn in 1985 Iron Bowl.
The Associated Press All-American made 30 of 35 field-goal attempts, including a long of 50 yards last season and a 54-yard kick as a junior. He made 42 of 46 extra-point attempts.
Tiffin needs to improve his depth on his kickoffs, but he hopes that playing in pressure-packed games in the SEC will help him land a spot in the NFL.
"I think a lot of guys don’t come from a high-pressure environment that go to the NFL," Tiffin said. "They may come from a small school. They may come from a lot of different situations. I think I would be used to the pressure that you play under in the NFL."
Tiffin has worked with former Dallas kicker Chris Boniol, but doesn't consider himself to be an overly technical kicker.
"You've got guys who are really natural and guys who are really technical," Tiffin said. "I’m probably somewhere in the middle."
Tiffin says he can make field goals from 60 yards in a controlled environment. He considers the 50- and 49-yard field goals he made against Tennessee in a 12-10 victory last season as the biggest kicks of his college career.
