The first home game: Julie Elliott, a schoolteacher credited with choosing the team nickname, poses with (from left) founding owner Rankin Smith, then-UGA football coach Vince Dooley and Jesse Outlar, the former sports editor of the Atlanta Constitution. Elliott wrote in the naming contest that " . . . the falcon is proud and dignified with great courage and fight."
