MOBILE — Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick turned some heads during Tuesday’s practice for the 63rd annual Senior Bowl, which is set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Quick, who’s playing for the North team, repeatedly got open using his speed and fluid route running. Also, at 6-foot, 3 1/2 inches tall, he towers over most defensive backs. He interviewed with the Falcons on Monday night.
“The No. 1 guy that has stood out from a small school has been Brian Quick from Appalachian State,” nfl.com draft analyst Bucky Brooks said. “He’s created a buzz because people want to see a guy with his size and athleticism playing outside.”
Iowa wide receiver Marvin McNutt also had a strong practice. He made a great move on Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard to get open during the one-on-one drills.
Some other players stood out, too.
“The tackle Mike Adams from Ohio State is intriguing,” Brooks said. “He’s big, physical and real athletic. The guard [Kevin] Zeitler from Wisconsin is a pretty gritty guy.”
Quick is Appalachian State’s all-time leader in receptions (202), receiving yards (3,418) and touchdown catches (31). Those records stood for seven, 31 and 43 years, respectively, before Quick broke them last season.
“I feel like I’m not there yet,” Quick said. “I’m not complete. I’ve been out there in this atmosphere, and I’m getting used to the quarterbacks. It’s different. It’s a lot different.”
Mayock’s filter
Mike Mayock of NFL Network is on hand to cover the practices and has a simple question for players when he interviews them.
“For me it’s all about the tape and then number one, how does your heart beat?” Mayock said. “What’s the most important thing in your life? Do you want to be a great football player or do you want to make a lot of money and hang out?”
Upshaw playing well
Alabama defensive lineman Courtney Upshaw is having a strong week of practice thus far.
“I really like him a lot,” Mayock said. “I think he’s one of the few guys who you can line him up as a 4-3 defensive end and he’d be great. I think the 3-4 teams are going to love him as an outside linebacker.
“I just watched the national championship tape the other day, and this kid jumps off the tape. He has the talent and ability.”
Etc.
Two former Georgia Bulldogs offensive linemen have been busy this week. Ben Jones has practiced at center, left guard and right guard for the South. Cordy Glenn practiced at left tackle Monday and at left guard Tuesday. ... The North team is being coached by Leslie Frazier and the Minnesota Vikings’ coaching staff. “It’s going to be a tremendous benefit for us,” Frazier said. “We have 10 picks in this draft. We took five guys from the Senior Bowl last season, and they ended up making our ballclub.”
