Falcons rookie left tackle Jake Matthews, who suffered a left ankle injury against the Saints, was held out of practice on Wednesday.
“Jake Matthews is on the injury report along with Roddy White (knee),” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “He did not participate in practice today. Roddy was a limited participant. Those were our two players on the injury report.”
Matthews left Sunday’s game against the Saints with what the team said is an ankle injury. Matthews had an MRI today and Smith said the team would update his condition when the initial injury report of the week is issued on Wednesday.
The injury report comes out at 4 p.m. and likely just list Matthews as a non-participate with an ankle injury.
Matthews was the No. 6 overall pick in the May draft out of Texas A&M. He began training camp as the starter at right tackle, then moved to left tackle when Sam Baker suffered a season-ending injury during the second exhibition game.
Veteran Gabe Carimi replaced Matthews during the Saints game. The Bears selected Carimi in the first round of the 2011 draft to play tackle but he struggled at both tackle spots before eventually being moved to guard.
Carimi played in 14 games with three starts for Tampa Bay in 2013. He practiced mostly at guard during Falcons training camp with some reps at right tackle.
Carimi struggled mightily filling in for Matthews as he gave up up four hurries in his 41 pass blocking snaps and committed three 3 penalties.
