Police in Louisiana arrested a former NFL player in connection to the shooting of an NFL hopeful late Friday.
The Times-Picayune reports police charged 36-year-old Brandon Winey with attempted second-degree murder for allegedly shooting 24-year-old Tahj Jones. Jones is a senior and former linebacker at Louisiana State University. Winey also played for LSU from 1997 to 2000.
Jones was shot just two days after taking part in LSU's pro day. Police say they don't know how the two former LSU players know each other, but say Winey and Jones saw each other when they both met up with a female friend at her apartment Friday night.
WAFB reports police say the two got into a fight at the apartment located in Sulphur, La. — about two hours out of Baton Rouge. That's when police say Winey pulled out a gun and shot Jones in the stomach. Winey allegedly left, and the woman inside the apartment took Jones to the hospital.
After Jones and the woman arrived at a nearby hospital, USA Today reports Jones was flown to a hospital 100 miles away in Alexandria for surgery.
Bleacher Report points out Winey was arrested at his home nearby a short time later on charges of second-degree attempted murder.
WBRZ reported Jones was in serious condition Saturday night and is currently recovering from emergency surgery he got earlier in the day.
Jones is eligible for the NFL draft in May, but Bleacher Report says it's unlikely he'll get drafted — regardless of Friday night's shooting. Winey is currently in jail on a $1 million bond.
