Five Falcons who should make the roster

At the halfway point of the exhibition season, here’s a look at five Falcons players who have been surprises, including why each player might nor might not make the 53-man roster:

Thomas Johnson, defensive tackle

Background: Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Dallas out of Middle Tennessee in 2005. Has been waived by Dallas, Houston and the New York Jets.

Why he might make it: Has been sturdy against the run and posted a big touchdown-saving sack against the Lions.

Why he might not: The position is stacked. He could be the odd tackle out behind Jonathan Babineaux, Peria Jerry, Trey Lewis and Vance Walker, who also are having good camps.

What's next: Needs to sustain his intensity and solid play.

Eric Weems, wide receiver

Background: Signed as an undrafted free agent from Bethune-Cookman in 2007. Has been on the practice squad and was elevated to the 53-man roster in each of the past two seasons.

Why he might make it: Doesn't have any more practice-squad eligibility. Has shown promise as a punt returner and has developed his route running.

Why he might not: If the Falcons decide to go with bigger blocking receivers, Weems could be in trouble.

What's next: Needs to keep doing a good job on his punt returns. He broke one for 34 yards against Detroit.

Lawrence Sidbury, defensive end

Background: Fourth-round pick from Richmond this year.

Why he might make it: He is making a fast transition from Richmond to the NFL. Showed his pass-rushing ability with two sacks against the Rams.

Why he might not: Probably already has made the team, but will need to show that he can also play the run in order to get on the field.

What's next: Could be the designated pass rusher opposite of John Abraham in obvious passing situations if he keeps developing.

Tony Gilbert, linebacker

Background: Steady veteran who was inactive for all 16 games last season.

Why he might make it: He has been steady while backing up Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker. He would provide some depth and versatility along the rebuilt unit.

Why he might not: While he appears to be safely ahead of fellow veteran Edmond Miles, who has been out with a knee injury, Miles could return and make a late charge.

What's next: Must remain steady and show the coaches that there wouldn't be a major drop off if he has to play.

Eric Brock, safety

Background: Signed as an undrafted free agent from Auburn in 2008. Was on the practice squad last season before making the 53-man roster in December.

Why he might make it: Has turned in two solid games. Led the team with seven tackles against Detroit. Added three tackles against St. Louis and a game-saving interception.

Why he might not: Behind starters Thomas DeCoud and Erik Coleman are rookie William Moore and Jamaal Fudge. There's also special-teams maven Antoine Harris and cornerback/safety Von Hutchins.

What's next: If he doesn't make the Falcons, he won't be out on the street long.
