Falcons safety Dwight Lowery and linebacker Pat Angerer returned to the practice Saturday for the first time since suffering concussions.
Lowery, the projected starter at free safety, suffered his injury during practice on Aug. 2. Assuming Lowery has no ill effects after Saturday’s workout he will be cleared to participate in a contact practice on Monday, in accordance with the league’s concussion protocol.
Lowery was placed on injured reserve with the Jaguars last season after suffering a concussion in Week 3. He said he’s not mindful of being more cautious because of the head injuries.
“You can’t think like that on the football field,” Lowery said. “You think about that type of stuff, it’s going to hinder you. You’ve just got to trust the process and go with the flow and with how you feel.”
The Falcons signed Lowery in April as the projected replacement for departed safety Thomas DeCoud. Lowery is entering his seventh season after playing three seasons each with the Jets and Jaguars.
Angerer suffered his injury during practice on July 29. Like Lowery, he’s on schedule to participate in Monday’s full contact practice if he has no setbacks.
Angerer, 27, is trying to make a comeback after having microfracture knee surgery in December.
Falcons linebacker Tim Dobbins suffered an ankle injury in the exhibition opener against the Dolphins on Friday. Dobbins didn’t practice Saturday but should return in a day or two, Smith said.
Falcons wide receiver Roddy White didn’t practice on Saturday because of a scheduled day off, Smith said.
