FLOWERY BRANCH—Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has interviewed for the head coaching position at Boise State, Falcons coach Mike Smith confirmed today.

Koetter wasn’t available for comment and Smith declined to discuss Koetter’s candidacy other than to say he’s aware Koetter has talked to Boise State about the position.

“My focus and Dirk’s focus is on cleaning up the game from yesterday and that’s what he’s doing right now,” Smith said, referring to Atlanta’s 22-21 defeat at Green Bay Sunday.

Chris Petersen recently left Boise State to become the head coach at the University of Washington. Koetter was head coach at Boise State from 1998 to 2000 and posted a 26-10 record with the team’s first trip to a bowl game before leaving to become head coach at Arizona State.

Koetter is in his second season as Falcons offensive coordinator. He guided one of the league’s best units last year but injuries to Julio Jones, Roddy White and Steven Jackson plus sub par offensive line play have contributed to a plummet in offensive production.
