Former Falcons quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur was hired as the Titans’ offensive coordinator, the team announced Tuesday.
LaFleur was with the Falcons from 2015-16 and was on the coach Dan Quinn’s Super Bowl team staff. He left to become the offensive coordinator of the Rams for the 2017 season. He’s been involved with the league’s top scoring offense for the past two seasons.
LaFleur, 38, was popular on radio talk shows in Atlanta as the offense was imploding last season under first-time NFL offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. LaFleur did not call plays for the Rams under coach Sean McVay but will get the chance with the Titans.
However, he was credited with working wonders with Rams quarterback Jared Goff and helped the Falcons’ Matt Ryan earn the NFL MVP award. Last season, under Sarkisian and quarterback coach Bush Hamdan, Ryan’s touchdowns dipped from 38 to 20 and the team scoring went from first to 15th in the league.
Quinn elected to retain Sarkisian and hired veteran NFL coach Greg Knapp as quarterbacks coach after Hamdan left to become the University of Washington’s offensive coordinator.
LaFleur also served as the quarterbacks coach for four seasons with the Redskins (2010-13), when he worked with Robert Griffin III, and for one season at Notre Dame (2014).
He began his NFL coaching career as an offensive quality control assistant with the Texans (2008-09).
