Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said in an interview on ESPN radio that former Clemson and Gainesville High School quarterback Deshaun Watson will have a shot at winning the starting quarterback job from incumbent starter Tom Savage during training camp.

“We want to provide a competitive environment across the board,” Smith said. “So (Watson will) compete.”

Watson, who was both the AJC and Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year in Georgia during his junior and senior years at Gainesville High before winning a national title at Clemson, has said he’s content to wait his turn to get behind center in Houston.

“I have a lot to learn,” Watson said, during his introductory news conference in Houston. “So I'm anxious to get here and get to work and learn from Brandon Weeden and Tom Savage, two guys that I'm a huge fan of, who I watched when they were in college."
