Duluth's Daniel Johnson was selected by Chicago with the 11th pick in Friday's MLS SuperDraft in Los Angeles.

“It’s a dream,” Johnson said. “Like you said, I came in under the radar then was focused on enjoying the experience. More than anything I love to play soccer.”

Johnson, a midfielder who played at Maryland and then Louisville, was one of a few players who really helped himself with outstanding performances at the MLS combine. He was projected to go around 20 in mock drafts before the combine.

Johnson scored seven goals with assists in 41 games for the Cardinals.

Johnson said his first phone call would be to his dad, whose phone broke.

“I think he deserves the first call to be honest,” he said.

Atlanta United will host Chicago on March 18.

“Being able to play in Atlanta and have my family there will be incredible,” he said.
