The "Sports Illustrated" jinx is steeped in sports lore, dating back to Aug. 16, 1954, when Milwaukee Braves third baseman Eddie Mathews became the first person to appear on the cover. The Braves snapped a nine-game winning streak, and Mathews suffered a broken hand that caused him to miss seven games. Of course Michael Jordan appeared on the cover 49 times - his only jinx was dressing up for the Wizards. Here are some memorable college football covers and the ramifications:
