Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson defeated Virginia Tech and Justin Fuente on the field, but the Hokies’ leader was named the ACC’s coach of the year Tuesday.

Fuente, who will lead Virginia Tech (9-3, 6-2 ACC) against Clemson in the ACC Championship game Saturday, received 27 votes from the media members who cover the league and the teams. Johnson, who led the Yellow Jackets to a record of 8-4 overall, 4-4 in the conference, received two votes.

The Jackets upset the Hokies 30-20 in Blacksburg on Nov. 12.

Fuente, 40, is in its first season at Virginia Tech after successful seasons at Memphis. He succeeded Frank Beamer.
