Darnell Washington, the No. 10 overall recruit according to the 247Sports Composite, announced Thursday night that he will play football for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Washington, ranked the No. 1 recruit at the “athlete” position, announced at halftime of the Under Armour All-America game. He is a 6-foot-7, 260-pound prospect who projects to play tight end at Georgia.

Washington, out of Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas, told DawgNation earlier in the week in Orlando that he signed with UGA during the early period last month. He becomes the 20th commitment to UGA and the 18th signee in the 2020 class.

The next signing period for football begins Feb. 5. The two players who committed to Georgia before the December signing period but did not sign are offensive lineman Broderick Jones, a 5-star recruit from Lithonia, and Sedrick Van Pran, a 4-star recruit from New Orleans.

Washington shared with DawgNation what stood out in the days leading to the game in Orlando.

“It came down to how like I got along with the coaches,” he said. “Not only that with the recruiting pitches. I know what’s real and what’s not. It came down just to like the vibe of the schools and the vibe of the coaches. I just want to work. Work hard. I don’t want anything given. I want to earn everything I get.”

Georgia was just “different” in his mind.

“Every place is different but when I was there, I really can’t even,” Washington said. “I really don’t know. I think Dell McGee was like an honest coach. Even though he is a running back coach. At that time, he was the one recruiting me. I think he was a good dude. A good-hearted dude.”
