Jay Rome swinging a pick axe in a sand pile made for an interesting scene over to the side of Georgia’s practice fields on Thursday.

The Bulldogs’ junior tight end was in a green, non-contact jersey and not participating in Thursday’s practice. But he probably wishes his could have been on the field because what strength and conditioning coach Joe Tereshinski had him doing looked much harder.

Dressed in full pads but without a helmet, Rome was having to use the pick-axe to work his way through a large pile of sand in a pit the Bulldogs normally use to run in during training. Rome and another injured player alternated between the sand pit and riding a stationary exercise bike. Thursday’s temperatures were well into the 90s.

Rome, who is still recovering from off-season foot surgery, was just one of several players having to sit out Thursday’s practice due to injuries. Fellow tight end Jordan Davis was not on the field for a second straight day and linebackers Ramik Wilson (concussion) and Ryne Rankin (unknown) remained sidelined but were present on the field.

Cornerback Shattle Fenteng remained in a green, non-contact jersey, but the junior was dressed out in full pads and participated in early drills. Fenteng sat out the last two days with a shoulder injury. Wide receivers Chris Conley (unknown) and Justin Scott-Wesley (knee) were also participating and dressed out but in non-contact jerseys.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday the Bulldogs will not be providing injury updates on players this year as they have in the past.
