Georgia Tech defensive line coach Mike Pelton was to interview with Oklahoma for the same position on the Sooners’ staff Thursday, according to Sooner Scoop.

Pelton has coached at Tech for the past two seasons, brought to the school following jobs at Auburn, Louisiana-Lafayette and Vanderbilt. Pelton has done commendable work helping develop Jeremiah Attaochu into an All-American in 2013 and then forming an inexperienced and undermanned line into a functional group this past season.

Compensation could well be a factor. Oklahoma’s lowest-paid assistants last year received $325,000 in base pay last season. Pelton earned $213,950 last season.

When coach Paul Johnson signed his contract extension last December, an increased salary pool for the assistant coaches was part of the agreement.

Oklahoma lost its defensive line coach when Jerry Montgomery, who was also co-defensive coordinator, left to take a job with the Green Bay Packers.
