Philips Arena may become the host of an annual men’s basketball tournament featuring historically black colleges and universities.

A press conference has been scheduled on Tuesday to announce an event called The HBCU Tip-Off Championship, which will be played Nov. 9-11.

The tournament will feature a combination of eight Division I and Division II schools, including Morehouse in this year’s field. But the bracket will be arranged so that a Division II school can only face a Division I school in the title game or in the consolation game. Each school will play three games.

The field will replace at least seven schools each year. The champion will receive an invitation to return, pending a waiver from the NCAA, which limits the number of times a team can participate in a non-conference tournament.

Tickets are projected to go on sale April 1. A portion of the tournament’s proceeds will go toward Atlanta-area students to attend an HBCU.
