Kennesaw State’s Ray and Brown honored by Atlantic Sun

Kennesaw State men’s basketball players Kendrick Ray and Yonel Brown were honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference in its annual awards on Monday.

Ray was named the conference's newcomer of the year after leading the Owls with a scoring average of 18.9 points per game.

Ray, a junior, and Brown, a senior who averaged 18.6 points per game, were named to the conference’s second team despite have the second- and fourth-highest scoring averages in the conference.

The Owls will play Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of the Atlantic Sun tournament on Tuesday in Fort Myers.

The rest of the awards, all of which were voted on by the league’s coaches:

Player of the year: Dallas Moore, North Florida.

Defensive player of the year: Demarcus Daniels, North Florida.

Freshman of the year: Derick Newton, Stetson.

Coaching staff of the year: North Florida, which won the league's regular-season title.

First team: Moore, Florida Gulf Coast's Marc-Eddy Norelia, Jacksonville's Kori Babineaux, NJIT's Damon Lynn and North Florida's Beau Beech.

Second team: Brown, Ray, Lipscomb's J.C. Hampton, South Carolina-Upstate's Michael Buchanan and Stetson's Brian Pegg.

Freshmen team: Stetson's Derick Newton, Florida Gulf Coast's Zach Johnson, Lipscomb's Garrison Mathews and Eli Pepper, and South Carolina-Upstate's Deion Holmes.
