Georgia State contacts Metress about basketball job
By Doug Roberson
March 16, 2011Georgia State has contacted Augusta State's Dip Metress about its vacant men's basketball coaching position, according to a person familiar with the situation who wished to remain anonymous because a decision hasn't been made.
Metress is 170-51 in seven seasons coaching the Jaguars. They have made the NCAA Division II tournament five consecutive years.
An official at Georgia State said they are declining to comment on the search.
Panthers athletic director Cheryl Levick fired Rod Barnes before the CAA tournament this season. He went 44-79 in four seasons.
Georgia State never averaged 1,500 fans during Barnes' time and attendance dropped to 915 this season, the lowest in the conference. He was hired in 2007 after an eight-season run at Mississippi in which he was named the Naismith national coach of the year in 2001.
Georgia State has also been interviewing other candidates, including assistants at bigger programs.
