It’s been a big year for Tyrone Poole.

The former defensive back graduated from Fort Valley State University 27 years after leaving for the NFL, and on Monday was listed among the 176 former players and 38 coaches on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

Poole, from LaGrange, was as a four-year starter at Fort Valley State from 1991 to 1994. He made 41 starts, snatching 17 interceptions, while averaging 13.3 yards per punt return at the historically black college 100 miles south of Atlanta.

He was the 22nd overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.

He enjoyed a 13-year career in the NFL playing at Carolina, Indianapolis, Denver, New England, Oakland and Tennessee. He won two Super Bowls as a member of the Patriots.

The finalists for the 2019 class will be announced in January during College Football Playoff National Championship festivities. The 2019 class will be inducted during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10, 2019, in New York.
