College football's most-played rivalries

When Georgia and Georgia Tech meet Saturday they will continue a hostility that dates back to 1893 and remains one of the most-played rivalry games in college football.

Georgia-Georgia Tech: They call it "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate" for a reason. Georgia has dominated the series over the last decade, but is should be noted that both teams are 9-2 and ranked in the Top 20. The Bulldogs and Jackets have previously met four times since 1966 as Top 20-ranked opponents. The Yellow Jackets won all four. When they meet Saturday they will continue a hostility that dates back to 1893 and remains one of the most-played rivalry games in college football. Here are some others:

Minnesota-Wisconsin: College football's most played game dates back to 1890. Since 1948, the winner of the Gophers vs. Badgers showdown has heaved the prized Paul Bunyan Axe.

Clemson-South Carolina: Known as the Palmetto Bowl, the long history of animosity between the schools dates back to the early 1800s and has various political and cultural roots. Fights were common in the early years, and in 2004 the Gamecocks and Tigers had an old-school brawl that resulted in both schools banning their teams from postseason play. South Carolina has won five straight, but Clemson holds a 65–42–4 advantage in the all-time series.

Alabama-Auburn: The Iron Bowl is a 365-days-a-year topic in the state. Last year's missed kick and return for a touchdown by the Tigers will be on loop until a new highlight is created in Saturday's game.

Georgia-Auburn: The Deep South's Oldest Rivalry dates back to 1892. Georgia avenged last year's "Prayer at Jordan-Hare" and trimmed Auburn's lead in the series to 54–53–8.

North Carolina-Virgina: While not as notable as the Georgia-Auburn rivalry, the South's Oldest Rivalry dates back just as far and has been played continuously since 1919 - with just the same intensity.

Oregon-Oregon State: Nicknamed the Civil War, it's a rivalry that didn't get much attention for years because neither school was much more than an afterthought in the Pac-10 for decades, but what it lacked in national exposure it made up for in student body shenanigans. The Oregon State homecoming queen was taken hostage for about a half hour by Oregon students in 1960. In 1972, Ducks fans stormed the field after a win and tore down the goal posts -- at Oregon State.

California-Stanford: The Cardinal and Golden Bears are responsible for one of the most famous plays in college football history. Known simply as "The Play," Cal used five laterals and had to run over a Stanford trombone player to score the winning touchdown on the last play of the game in 1982. Stanford still does not acknowledge the victory and insists the play was illegal.

Army-Navy: No single game is as important to its participants as Army-Navy. For the vast majority of the seniors, it's the last competitive football game they'll ever play. And when the game is over the teams stand together as the alma maters are played.

Mississippi-Mississippi State: They have been playing since 1901 for the Golden Egg. Ole Miss has more victories over Mississippi State, who this year is playing for playoff contention.

Kansas-Kansas State: The two teams had a very long history prior to the inauguration of the Governor's Cup: they began play in 1902 and have faced each other every season since 1911, putting it among the longest active series in college football.

Tennessee-Kentucky: The cross-state rivalry (formerly known as the Battle for the Barrel) between Tennessee and Kentucky dates to their first college football game in 1893. The Vols won 26 straight over the Wildcats - from 1985 to 2010, which is one of the longest streaks in college football history.

Michigan-Ohio State: Ohio State coach Woody Hayes refused to even refer to Michigan by name. He'd just call it, "That school to the north." John Cooper went 111-43-4 in 13 seasons as Buckeyes coach, but was 2-10-1 against Michigan and most Ohio State fans have never forgiven him.

Baylor-Texas Christian: First played in 1899, the onetime cross-town rivals have met more than 110 times - 36 of them won in a shutout. The teams took a 10-year break, reviving the rivalry in 2006.

Oklahoma-Texas: Since 1912, the Sooners and Longhorns have played all but three of their games in Dallas -- halfway between Austin, Texas, and Norman, Okla. And since 1932, the Cotton Bowl has been the site and the game has been played during the Texas State Fair. Corny dogs and Ferris wheels are as much a part of the Red River Rivalry as great football by two perennial powerhouses.
