At the ACC Kickoff last week in Charlotte, N.C., the AJC asked a series of questions of Georgia Tech’s opponents in the Coastal Division. In the final series of answers, Coastal players identified Yellow Jackets players who stood out to them in their games against Tech.

Bryon Fields, cornerback, Duke

“The quarterback, Justin Thomas, was really good. He gave us some fits defensively.”

Kurt Benkert, quarterback, Virginia

“They have a guy that ran some jet sweeps, I think, and took one really long.”

(That would seem to be A-back Qua Searcy, who scored on a 60-yard run off a toss.)

Avonte Maddox, cornerback, Pittsburgh

“Last year, it was the quarterback (Justin Thomas). He was a pretty good player. He controlled the offense pretty well, good fakes, good throws.”

Brian O’Neill, offensive tackle, Pittsburgh

“42’s (KeShun Freeman) a really good player, solid. … He’s big, he’s quick, he hustles, great technique. He’s one of the better defensive ends I’ve played against in my time here.”

Andrew Motuapuaka, linebacker, Virginia Tech

“No. 5 (Thomas) – he didn’t play. Nobody really stuck out.”

Mark Walton, running back, Miami

“To be honest, I don’t even know any of their players.”

Bentley Spain, offensive tackle, North Carolina

“I’m not going to say one in specific, but I think that they have a very good defense, and it’s always a challenge playing them.”
