There will be no 12th regular-season game this year for Georgia Tech. While athletic department officials were seeking to arrange a game to replace the one that Central Florida canceled because of complications caused by Hurricane Irma, they no longer are having any active discussions with anyone about a 12th game, team spokesman Mike Flynn said in an email Friday.
Tech was trying to arrange a game with Georgia State, which would have been something of a historic matchup. The two schools, separated by less than two miles, have never met on the football field. Georgia State fielded its first team in 2010 and moved from FCS to FBS in 2013.
However, the game was not able to be arranged. Among the first obstacles was that Georgia State had a Sun Belt game at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 7, which is a bye week for the Yellow Jackets and the date that Tech had hoped to use to schedule a 12th opponent. Georgia State also was looking for a game, the result of having its Sept. 30 game against Memphis canceled because of schedule reshuffling related to Hurricane Irma.
Tech was in the market for a game because its Sept. 16 game at UCF was canceled. On Tuesday, coach Paul Johnson said that there had been conversations about a 12th game to be played on the open date, and that the preference would be an FBS opponent.
Without a game, Tech will have two weeks to prepare for its Oct. 14 game at Miami.
