Former Georgia and NFL quarterback Fran Tarkenton has pledged a six-figure donation to the Georgia Athletic Association’s campaign to raise funds to build an indoor athletic facility.
Tarkenton, who led the Bulldogs to the 1959 SEC championship and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is the first football letterman to commit to a six-figure gift.
“I’m excited about the plans Georgia has to build a state-of-the-art indoor athletic facility for coach Mark Richt and our football program,” said Tarkenton, an Atlanta businessman and entrepreneur.
The UGA Athletic Board has approved building a $30 million, multi-purpose indoor athletic facility. Pending approval by the University System of Regents, construction will begin after the 2015 season ends.
“I believe the indoor athletic facility will be significant for coach Richt in winning championships,” Tarkenton added. “He has recruited well and it seems to me that he has the best coaching staff he has had at Georgia. I believe he will win another championship for us soon.”
Tarkenton also asked other lettermen to step forward with donations.
