Before beginning his coaching career, Mark Richt was a quarterback at the University of Miami (shown here in 1982).

After Jim Donnan was fired as UGA coach in December of 2000, athletic director Vince Dooley introduced Richt later that month as the Dogs' new coach.

Richt had tutored a pair of Heisman Trophy winners (Charlie Ward, Chris Weinke) during his time as an assistant at Florida State.

.... which ended with the famous catch by Verron Haynes to cap a 26-24 victory.

The Dogs advanced to the SEC championship game at the Georgia Dome in 2002. Richt talks to fullback J.T. Wall during a light practice.

The Dogs defeated Arkansas 30-3 to win their first conference title under Richt ....

.... and UGA went on to defeat Florida State 26-13 in the Sugar Bowl as pupil (Richt) defeated mentor (FSU coach Bobby Bowden).

Richt acknowledges fans after UGA's 41-14 victory at Tennessee in 2003.

Richt and the Dogs celebrate a 31-24 victory over Florida in 2004.

Richt and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier meet on the field prior to the 2005 matchup in Athens, won by UGA 17-15.

UGA went on to win its second SEC title under Richt, capping the 2005 season with a 34-14 victory over LSU in the conference championship game.

UGA faced West Virginia in the Sugar Bowl following the 2005 season, a game that was played at the Georgia Dome after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans.

UGA finished 9-4 in 2006, including a big win at nationally-ranked Auburn 37-15 ....

.... and a 15-12 victory over Georgia Tech in Athens.

UGA capped the 2006 season with a 31-24 victory over Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
