Georgia and Auburn play Saturday in Auburn, Ala. The game will take place 29 years after the schools met in one of the wildest nights in college football history. The Bulldogs upset the favored Tigers 20-16 that night and hundreds of fans ran onto the field at the game’s conclusion. The public address announcer at Jordan-Hare Stadium warned fans to stay in the stands but some continued to celebrate on the field by pulling up pieces of turf as mementoes. They clawed at the Auburn logo at midfield and someone at Auburn made the decision to turn powerful industrial water hoses on the fans on the field, then later, inexplicably, onto fans in the stands. Many arrests were made, of both UGA and Auburn fans. We’ve scoured the AJC’s archives and found these photos from that night, many of which have never been published before.
