Of all the freshmen in Florida State’s 2012 signing class, cornerback Ronald Darby continues to be the most productive.
Darby had four tackles, including three solo stops, in FSU’s 48-7 win over Duke on Saturday. While a backup to Nick Waisome, Darby often plays a key role in FSU’s five- and six-defensive back alignments.
He was named ACC co-defensive back of the week on Monday.
“Ronald Darby is having a great year as a freshman,” FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said. “Very mature and handling things very well.”
Darby has 15 tackles and has broken up five passes this season.
FSU held a Duke passing attack that had been averaging 289 passing yards per game to just 129 yards. The Seminoles (8-1, 5-1 ACC) rank sixth nationally in pass defense, allowing just 154.2 yards per game.
FSU has a bye this week and plays at Virginia Tech on Thursday.
Longest yet to come? Dustin Hopkins made a 55-yard field goal to beat Clemson in 2010. And then he had a career-long 56-yarder on Saturday in the 48-7 win over Duke.
After the game, he was asked about his range and what would be the longest field goal he thought he could make.
“I guess it’s kind of like golf,” Hopkins said. “You can hit a certain club a certain distance when you really get a hold of it. But you’re probably not going to hit that distance all the time. So if I hit my A ball, with no wind, I’m saying 65. And that’s A ball. That’s about as good as it’s going to get.”
