Bobby Bowden announced his retirement after 33 years as Florida State head coach.

After 33 years, Bobby Bowden has announced his retirement as the head football coach at Florida State University where he compiled a 315-97-4 record and won 12 ACC championships.

Bowden coached in several spots before embarking on his 33-year career at Florida State. His resume includes stops at Howard College, now known as Samford; South Georgia College; and West Virginia (above), where he compiled a 42-26 record before being named the Seminoles' head coach in 1976.

Bowden has 388 career victories, second only to Penn State's Joe Paterno among major college coaches.

The Seminoles have played in five national championship games under Bowden, winning two -- in 1993 and 1999.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt (right) played against Bowden's Seminoles as the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes in 1982. He and Bowden would bond later when Richt served as the Seminoles' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Bowden has coached two Heisman winners and a number of highly regarded pros, including former Atlanta Falcon Warrick Dunn.

Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher (right) was tapped as the Seminoles' next coach. Fisher receives $5 million from Florida State if he's not the head coach by January 2011.
