Sherwood Brown and Eric McKnight scored 14 points apiece as host Florida Gulf Coast defeated Miami 63-51 on Tuesday night to post its biggest win in school history.

In front of the Eagles’ first men’s sellout crowd — 4,552 at Alico Arena in Fort Myers — Bernard Thompson added 13 points.

Florida Gulf Coast (1-1), which is in just its second season of being NCAA eligible, lost by one point to Nebraska, Texas Christian and Southern Methodist last season before making a late run and reaching the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship game.

Miami (1-1) was led by Shane Larkin with 14 points. Kenny Kadji added 13.

Florida Gulf Coast led 32-25 at halftime. Behind Larkin’s shooting, Miami tied the game at 39. However, the Eagles responded with a 10-3 run and a 49-42 lead after a three-point play by McKnight. The Hurricanes couldn’t recover.

Mississippi State 78, Florida Atlantic 58: Roquez Johnson scored a career-high 17 points as the host Bulldogs (1-1) defeated the Owls (0-3). Greg Gantt led FAU with 17 points.

Central Florida 86, Alabama State 56: Isaiah Sykes had 23 points and Keith Clanton scored 20 as the Knights (2-0) beat the visiting Hornets (0-3). UCF shot 65.5 percent from the field.

Stetson 88, FAMU 66: Adam Pegg scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting to lead the host Hatters (1-1) past the Rattlers (0-2). Muhammad Abdul-Aleem had 20 points off the bench for Florida A&M.

Tulane 65, Bethune-Cookman 55: Ricky Tarrant scored 21 points as the host Green Wave (1-1) downed the Wildcats (0-2). Kevin Dukes had 13 points for Bethune-Cookman.

Palm Beach State 93, Tampa-Taag Academy 63: Paul Jones had 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Panthers (7-0) past the Ambassadors in Lake Worth.
