Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been namedGQ’s Citizen of the Year, the magazine announced Monday.

Since opting out of his contact with the San Francisco 49ers in March, the former Super Bowl quarterback has remained unsigned.

Kaepernick, who also appears on the magazine’s cover, began silently taking a knee last season with the 49ers during the playing of the national anthem in protest of police brutality and social injustice.

Interviews with Kaepernick's confidantes about how he will not be silenced can be read on GQ's website.
