JOSH CHILDRESS, G, 6-8, 210 Last year's stats: 13.0 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists Know your role: Childress has to lead the Hawks' second unit with his energy, athleticism and versatility.

SPEEDY CLAXTON, G, 5-11, 170 Last year's stats: 5.3 points, 4.4 assists and 1.9 reboundsKnow your role: The only thing the Hawks need Claxton to do is get healthy. They'll worry about his role after that.

AL HORFORD, F/C, 6-10, 245 Last year's stats (FLORIDA): 13.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocksKnow your role: This bruising rookie big man has to play beyond his years and his size to help offset the Hawks' deficiencies in the post.

ANTHONY JOHNSON, G, 6-3, 195Last year's stats: 5.3 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds.Know your role: The season opening starter at the point, Johnson has to make sure the Hawks get off to a good start.

JOE JOHNSON, G, 6-7, 235 Last year's stats: 25.0 points, 4.4 assists and 4.2 reboundsKnow your role: The All-Star and captain doesn't have to carry the entire load anymore, but he has to assume more of a (vocal) leadership position.

SOLOMON JONES, F/C, 6-10, 230 Last year's stats: 3.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.7 blocksKnow your role: A situational player, Jones will need to provide a lift on both ends of the floor in limited time.

ACIE LAW IV, G, 6-3, 195Last year's stats (TEXAS A&M): 18.1 points, 5.0 assists and 2.3 reboundsKnow your role: The future at point guard, it's just a matter of time before he's ready to take over the starting job.

TYRONN LUE, G, 6-0, 175 Last year's stats: 11.4 points, 3.6 assists and 1.9 reboundsKnow your role: Crafty veteran will once again be called upon for clutch shooting while guiding the Hawks' second unit.

ZAZA PACHULIA, C, 6-11, 280 Last year's stats: 12.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.5 assists Know your role: When he plays up to his size, the Hawks are a different team. When he doesn't the Hawks struggle mightily.

JOSH SMITH, F, 6-9, 235Last year's stats: 16.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.3 assistsKnow your role: The Hawks' most dynamic player needs to become its most consistent player. Then, and only then, can he reach his potential.

SALIM STOUDAMIRE, G, 6-1,175 Last year's stats: 7.7 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.0 assistsKnow your role: He must stay ready, no matter how uneven his playing time is throughout the season.

MARVIN WILLIAMS, F, 6-9, 230 Last year's stats: 13.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists Know your role: Williams seems poised to assume a role as the Hawks' No. 2 scorer, but he'll have to prove it on a nightly basis.

MARIO WEST, G, 6-5, 210Last year's stats (Georgia Tech): 4.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.6 stealsKnow your role: The defensive equivalent to Stoudamire, he'll be the Hawks' situational defensive stopper.

SHELDEN WILLIAMS, F/C 6-9, 250 Last year's stats: 5.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 0.6 stealsKnow your role: Williams has to settle into his role and produce more in limited minutes to maintain his spot in the rotation.

LORENZEN WRIGHT, F/C 6-11, 255Last year's stats: 2.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.6 assistsKnow your role: Wright's the Hawks' security blanket in the post, at both power forward and center.
