The Hawks signed Tyler Cavanaugh to a partial guaranteed rookie contract Friday. The undrafted forward out of George Washington will attend training camp and then likely will play for the Hawks’ NBA G League affiliate, the Erie BayHawks.

The 6-foot-9 Cavanaugh played for the Hawks’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League earlier this month. He appeared in two games and averaged 3.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 10 minutes.

Cavanaugh responded to the signing on social media with the following tweet: “Yessir excited about the first step in my professional career!”

Cavanaugh, 23, appeared in 35 games last season for George Washington and averaged 18.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, .5 steals and .4 blocks in 32.2 minutes. He was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2016 NIT Tournament.

Next season will be the first that the Hawks have their own G League affiliate. The franchise will relocate to College Park for the 2019-20 season.
