The Hawks have assigned Edy Tavares to the NBA Development League. The center will play for the Austin Spurs via the flexible assignment rule.

The assignment continues to the Hawks philosophy of getting playing time for little used and developing players. The 7-foot-3 Tavares has appeared in just four games with the Hawks this season. He has played a total of 12 minutes and has been inactive 15 of the Hawks’ 27 games. Tavares was not at Hawks practice Thursday.

The Austin Spurs have upcoming games Friday at home against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (8:30 p.m.) and Sunday on the road against the Oklahoma City Blue (3 p.m.)

This will be the third D-League stint for Tavares. He has played for the Austin Spurs and the Canton Charge in different assignments. In total, he appeared in four games and averaged 10.0 points, with a .667 field-goal percentage, 11.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks. He had two double-doubles.
