Young fan sends his first HR ball to Pirates' McCutchen as ‘thank you’ for hospital visit

Nov 3, 2015

Pittsburgh Pirates CF Andrew McCutchen posted a photo to his Facebook account Monday night of a baseball and letter from a young fan.

The fan, who signed the letter as Matt Graeber, wrote that he suffered a brain abscess and spent most of his time in Children’s Hospital over the summer.

“Baseball is my favorite sport and I was not sure if I would ever be able to play again. Your visit helped inspire me to get better,” Matt wrote.

In the letter, Matt wrote that he is back on the field playing baseball and hit three home runs over the weekend.

Matt - thank you for the HR ball... and the autograph! More importantly, I'm so glad you're doing better and healing....

He sent his first home run ball to McCutchen as a “thank you” for his visit and the picture that was drawn for him by McCutchen when he was in the hospital.

In his Facebook post, McCutchen said that Matt was the “true hero” and thanked Children’s Hospital for the work they do to help children heal.
