The Braves placed right-hander Mike Foltynewicz on the disabled list late Tuesday and promoted Williams Perez from Triple-A Gwinnett to start against the Marlins on Wednesday.

The Braves said Foltynewicz was diagnosed with costochondritis, which is inflammation of cartilage in the ribs. Foltynewicz was scratched from his scheduled start on Monday with what the team said was an illness. Shelby Miller took his turn on short notice but had regular rest because the Braves had an off day between his starts.

Left-hander Manny Banuelos was recalled from Gwinnett to start against the Marlins on Tuesday. He was on a limited pitch count because he’d only pitched four total innings over two rehab outings in his return from a stint on the DL because of elbow inflammation.

Banuelos allowed three earned runs and six hits over 2 2/3 innings against the Marlins while throwing 52 pitches.

“This was his first start coming back in the major leagues from his injury,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We didn’t expect anything more. We were hoping we would get clean innings, but we were hoping we would get three solid innings from him. He’s healthy and we will go on from his next start.”

Following Perez in the rotation are Matt Wisler, Julio Teheran, Miller and Banuelos.
