Akeel Morris had pitched just 54 2/3 innings above Single-A (with one brief appearance in the majors) when the Braves traded for him last summer. He spent one day with the Braves last August before he was sent back to Triple-A Gwinnett without appearing in a game.
The Braves recalled Morris before this year’s All-Star game and his stay in the majors is lasting longer this time. He hasn’t allowed an earned run over his first four appearances with five strikeouts, no walks and one hit allowed over 3 2/3 innings.
“He’s done a good job,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “His command has been better than I remember in spring (training). He’s got that change-up, too, that’s an equalizer. It’s effective on lefties. It’s been good to see.
“He’s an interesting guy. We’ll get a better look at him down the road, but it’s been good. He’s got a nice arm.”
The Braves acquired Morris from the Mets in June 2016 for Kelly Johnson and cash. The Mets drafted Morris in the 10th round of the 2010 draft out of the U.S. Virgin Islands. He made one appearance for the Mets in 2015 and allowed five runs in 2/3 innings.
