Braves third base coach Ron Washington was a finalist for the Padres' managerial position, but San Diego reportedly hired Jayce Tingler to lead its franchise, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Washington was reported as one of two finalists, if not the favorite. There was educated speculation the Padres could hire both their top candidates, though Washington likely would have to be the manager in that scenario.

The Braves’ infield defense has thrived under Washington, who’s lauded for his enthusiasm and relationships with players. Washington previously managed in Texas, where he took the Rangers to back-to-back World Series berths in 2010-11.

Tingler was a bench coach and player-development coordinator, among other roles, with the Rangers. The Padres opted for younger (Tingler, 38) over older (Washington, 67) as they reach an important transition phase of their rebuild, which has yielded a collection of young pitching and is headlined by star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.

There are four managerial openings remaining - Mets, Giants, Royals and Pirates - but Washington has only been connected only to the to Padres job.
