Meet Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson

When Tim Hudson originally joined the Braves in Dec. 2004, fans knew to expect wins from the righty. Now that terms are finalized on a three-year extension, the 34-year-old says he's excited to get back to winning with the Braves. But we figured that already.

After all, baseball fans had likely followed Hudson's success on the mound for his original team, Oakland, from 1999-2004. The two-time All-Star selection (2000, 2004) led the AL in wins in 2000.

But Atlanta fans perhaps didn't know they were also getting a guy who could handle himself with actor Matthew McConaughey (center) at his first Braves spring camp in 2005.

And they quickly learned that Team Hudson - wife Kim and daughters Tess (left) and Kennedie (right) - is one tight-knit unit off the field. Son Kade Timothy joined the family soon after this photo was taken in 2005.

Atlanta's newest starter got a chance to savor being part of Braves postseason play in 2005, when the team won the NL East division pennant.

Hudson, or "Huddy" as fellow players and fans call him, has been popular with Braves Nation since his arrival.

Born in Columbus, Ga., and raised in nearby Phenix City, Ala., Hudson and wife Kim have been among the Braves' biggest community goodwill ambassadors. Here, they deliver Thanksgiving turkeys to needy people living in the shadow of Turner Field, Nov. 2005.

And as a dad, Hudson knows what it is to bring a smile to a youngster's face. He made a quick fan of Nathaniel Harper, whose sister, Rebecca, has a rare form of hemophilia, while handing out gift cards to Make A Wish kids and their siblings at the Buckhead Toys-R-Us, Dec. 2006.

And puppy makes three: Hudson introduced Elmo, his Dalmatian mix, newly adopted from the Homeless Pets Foundation, to then-Braves reliever Phil Stockman before a game in 2006.

But back to baseball: After undergoing Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow towards the end of the 2008 season, Hudson didn't return to the Braves until July 2009, when he started minor league rehab, starting some games for the team's new AAA affiliate in Gwinnett. Hudson rejoined Atlanta's starting rotation in Sept. 2009.
