Legendary career of Braves' Pete Van Wieren

Pete Van Wieren, who began his broadcasting career with the Atlanta Braves in 1976 along with late partner Skip Caray, died Aug. 2, 2014, at the age of 69.

Pete Van Wieren, who began his broadcasting career with the Atlanta Braves in 1976 along with late partner Skip Caray, died Aug. 2, 2014, at the age of 69.

Pete Van Wieren joined Turner Sports as a Braves broadcaster in December 1975. He also broadcast Hawks and Flames games, Big Ten Conference football games, and NBA games on TBS and TNT.

Pete Van Wieren was affectionately known as "The Professor" for his pre-game preparedness.

Van Wieren missed only one game out of 162 last season when he had laryngitis. He joked that he actually broadcasted 34 years for the Braves because he called about 135 postseason games.

Pete Van Wieren was the drummer (center) of his college band,"The Hustlers."

Braves announcers Pete Van Wieren, left, and Skip Caray, right, were honored for 25 years with the Braves in 2000. In the middle is Ernie Johnson Sr., the long time Braves announcer who had retired earlier. All three have since passed away.

Van Wieren (fifth from left) was on hand for Chipper Jones's number retirement.

Pete Van Wieren, who was honored by the Braves following his retirement, revealed in 2010 that he was diagnosed with cutaneous B-cell lymphoma. He suffered a relapse and additional rounds of chemotherapy after a recurrence in the fall of the same year.
